Post Sandy Workshop: Non-Structural Floodproofing

Target Audience: Local Officials, Planners, Architects, Contractors

Co-Sponsored by ASFPM and NJAFM

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, affected property owners all over the region are facing decisions on when, how, and where to rebuild.  This decision is especially important in light of the future high cost of flood insurance and increasing risks from coastal storms.  There are many nonstructural floodproofing techniques that can be used and participation in this workshop will enable you to better understand and explain these options to your citizens or clients.

This technical workshop will focus on the “how” aspect, covering different rebuilding and redevelopment options.  The floodproofing workshop will include topics such as:

  • ·         Elevation
  • ·         Acquisition/demolition/relocation
  • ·         Taking alternative measures such as zoning and transfer development
  • ·         Dry and wet floodproofing
  • ·         Costs for nonstructural floodproofing
  • ·         NFIP Regulations
  • ·         Biggert/Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012

Two national experts, Mr. Gene Barr and Mr. Larry Buss who were former members of the US Army Corps of Engineers National Nonstructural Floodproofing Committee, will be leading this workshop.  Gene and Larry bring decades of floodproofing experience and knowledge that can be applied in many situations, whether it be for residential structures or commercial businesses.
